NEW DUTCH GALLERIES: SIX HUNDRED YEARS OF DUTCH ART & CULTURE
The new, "splendid" 2nd floor galleries now house the museum’s extensive Dutch Collection of Fine & Decorative Arts, illustrating 600 years of art and culture. On exhibit are fifty-six 17th to 19th century Dutch paintings and more than one hundred and fifty cultural objects, from fine furniture, delftware and silver, to original Dutch costumes. NATIVE MICHIGAN: THE PAINTINGS OF WILLIAM KUBIAK
Wichers Gallery, first floor: around forty fine oil paintings of Michigan’s Native tribes. An authority on Great Lakes Native American life, Grand Rapids artist and journalist William J. NICHOLAS, THE SAINT: IMAGES FROM EAST AND WEST
For centuries Nicholas the Christian Saint, also known as Santa Claus, has been venerated by Orthodox and Catholics and honored by Protestants, for his faith and his example of generosity to those in need, especially children. A selection of Saint Nicholas icons and images in various media shows the beloved saint in these traditions. Lobby exhibit, free admission. FIRE WALK, 1 PM (Sat)
Join Museum President Joel Lefever on a 10-block walking tour, following the path of the Great Holland Fire of Oct. 8, 1871, which also was the day of the Chicago, IL and Peshtigo WI fires. Lefever talks about the causes and extent of the devastation, pointing out what was spared. The historical tour begins at the Cappon Visitor Center, proceeds through the Historic District to Pillar Church and ends at Van Vleck Hall on the Hope College campus. The tour lasts approx. 1 hour. Meet author and artist William J. Kubiak among his paintings in the "Native Michigan" exhibit and have him sign a copy of his book, Great Lakes Indians: A Pictorial Guide. The Victorian Christmas Tea is a "tasty" and fun opportunity to learn about history. See the stately Cappon House dressed in its authentic Victorian Christmas finery and sample dainty tea foods of Victorian Holland. The refreshments served are based on recipes from Holland's founding families and prominent residents. A pianist in period attire will complement the festive atmosphere with tunes from the holidays that were played around 1900. Space is limited, reservations are required.
