OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASEBury the Dragon!

A new window display at the Holland Area Convention and Visitors Bureau is turning heads, producing smiles, and bringing awareness to current challenges being faced by the Holland Museum.

Styled after a 1950’s horror movie poster, the display invites community members to help Holland Museum “Bury the Dragon.” The “dragon” causing problems at the Museum isn’t actually a living creature, but a reference coined by recently appointed Holland Historical Trust Executive Director, Thea Grigsby, to describe the remaining expenses to be paid by the Museum as a result of the past June’s disastrous storms.

“There’s a great deal of positive energy in the air at the Trust right now, yet the issue of these expenses and this summer’s disaster looms in our path,” Grigsby says, “like some kind of awful dragon.” “We’re asking everyone to help the Holland Museum in putting this issue to rest and joining us as we move forward.”

While the main Museum building on 10th street remained dry and unharmed on June 19, the Holland Armory, which houses the Museum’s collection in its lower level did not. After heavy rains overwhelmed the City’s drain system, water burst through two steel doors at the Armory and doused a portion of the Museum’s collection. While some of the costs associated with collection items lost or needing restoration have been covered by insurance, structural damage to the Armory and other aspects of the recovery effort were not.Bury the Dragon!

The Museum’s ambitious “Bury the Dragon” campaign seeks to offset the remaining expenses, which currently stand near $100,000. Those interested in contributing can do so in the designated “Dragon Boxes” at the Holland Museum, 31 W. 10th Street, Cappon House Visitor Center, 228 W. 9th Street, or online at hollandmuseum.org.
